Time for Correctional Service of Canada to take front-line workers seriously
Could our federal correctional system have done more to prevent a repeat crime like Gallese's? While rates of recidivism are extremely low, those working directly on the front lines with offenders to change their behaviours and mindset, as well as assess their risk to the public, believe that the system is sick and nearing the breaking point. Consequently, we are calling for urgent changes to protect public safety, and employees too.
The public, media, and elected officials—including Quebec MP Pierre Paul-Hus and Quebec’s Justice Minister Sonia LeBel—expressed outrage that someone with such a violent past would be allowed back into the community, not to mention permitted by the Parole Board of Canada to regularly visit a local massage parlour to 'satisfy his sexual needs.'
