OTTAWA—In 1964, U.S. Supreme Court justice Potter Stewart came up with a now famous comment that has become a meme (not that there were memes back in 1964). During a threshold case on obscenity he stated, “I shall not today attempt further to define the kinds of material I understand to be embraced within that shorthand description [‘hard-core pornography’], and perhaps I could never succeed in intelligibly doing so. But I know it when I see it.”
