Time for Canada to consider its own nuclear deterrent

Without the reliable umbrella of U.S. nuclear deterrence, anything else Canada spends on updating and expanding the Canadian Armed Forces will sadly be moot in the face of future aggression from nuclear adversaries like Russia, China or even possibly India.

In 1958, John Diefenbaker's government deployed Bomarc missiles in the Canadian North. They were supposed to be nuclear-armed, but Diefenbaker refused splitting his cabinet and souring relations with the United States. Dief lost in 1963 and the Cuban Missile Crisis revived the nuclear debate, writes Jamie Carroll.   Photograph courtesy of Wikimedia Commons

U.S. Donald Trump accepted a $400-million jumbo jet from the royal family of Qatar last week, even though he insists it was a gift to the Pentagon. What people don’t know, and probably never will, is what the other half of the exchange might have been, writes Michael Harris.   Photograph courtesy of Flickr/The White House

Trump just tossed a $400-million jumbo jet into the swamp he was supposed to drain

OpinionBY MICHAEL HARRIS
  • Even though accepting the jet is clearly unconstitutional, as Representative Jamie Raskin and Senator Richard Blumenthal have pointed out, Donald Trump got the gift legally approved by his attorney general. To her everlasting  shame, Pam Bondi has chosen her boss over her country and the Constitution.
