‘Tis the season for political renewal? Don’t hold your breath

Politics is going to take us all down. In its current form of cut-throat competitiveness and ruthless party controls, superficiality and the soundbite, it is fundamentally unable to meet the challenges of simultaneous crises. This colonial model of politics is no longer serving us, and perhaps has never served us well. What would it take to decolonize politics so that it’s based in compassion and the greater good? Do we have the will to remake politics and leadership, and will we do it in time? Can we decolonize politics?

Politics is going to take us all down: Green Party Leader Elizabeth May, front left, Conservative deputy leaders Melissa Lantsman and Andrew Scheer. Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet, back row left, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre. If Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre wants to make it to the Prime Minister's Office, he will have to dampen his shrillness and any hint of self-righteousness, and focus on being more constructive, writes Nelson Wiseman. The Hill Times photograph by Andrew Meade

Pierre Poilievre’s path to prime minister

OpinionBY NELSON WISEMAN
  • The Conservative leader must moderate his tone by jettisoning his simplistic sloganeering and attack dog persona. Coming across as a brawler is off-putting to many voters, especially women and seniors.
