‘Tis the season for political renewal? Don’t hold your breath

Politics is going to take us all down. In its current form of cut-throat competitiveness and ruthless party controls, superficiality and the soundbite, it is fundamentally unable to meet the challenges of simultaneous crises. This colonial model of politics is no longer serving us, and perhaps has never served us well. What would it take to decolonize politics so that it’s based in compassion and the greater good? Do we have the will to remake politics and leadership, and will we do it in time? Can we decolonize politics?

Politics is going to take us all down: Green Party Leader Elizabeth May, front left, Conservative deputy leaders Melissa Lantsman and Andrew Scheer. Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet, back row left, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre. Ford’s blunt talk is refreshing

OpinionBY EDITORIAL
  • Canadian political leaders will have to stand up and fight back with diplomacy, gold-plated negotiating skills, wily charm, facts, and sometimes, they will need to speak bluntly for all to hear, like Ford, because sucking up doesn't appear to be helping either. If this is a good-cop-bad-cop strategy, Ford's doing the bad cop well.
