Re: "The prime minister must demand a ceasefire in Gaza, write members of his youth council," (The Hill Times, Nov. 9). Canada’s reaction to the ongoing war in Gaza leaves us, the citizens, confused and horrified as the two members of the Prime Minister's Youth Council describe so well. When faced with Israel’s merciless onslaught on Gaza’s population, Canada’s politicians and media display a lack of humanitarian concern and respect for international law that is shocking to them and to many Canadians. The struggle for reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples raised expectations that Canada would never again support colonialism worldwide. However, in the Palestinian struggle for decolonization, Canada always stands with Israel and will support the country in every way possible, regardless of the rising death toll in Gaza, the destruction of hospitals, and the denial of fuel, water, medicine, and food to the besieged population under attack. Young people, thankfully, have no fear in pointing out the contradictions between words and actions: Haleema Ahmed and Ganiyat Sadiq expose Canada’s participation in the war in Gaza that directly led to the killing of thousands of Palestinian children. Official Canada only cares about children when it is politically convenient, a reality that many Canadians see with disgust and fight hard to change. Martina Lauer Kemptville, Ont.
