Re: "Renewable energy industry warns of ‘brain drain’ to the United States if Alberta government doesn’t reverse its moratorium," by Kevin Philipupillai, (The Hill Times, Aug. 17, 2023). Danielle Smith has crossed the line by kneecapping green energy in Alberta. It is time for the federal government to use its financial power to reign in Alberta, Ontario, and other provinces that are deliberately impeding the use of green alternatives and failing to curb greenhouse gas emissions. Yes, Canada is a minor contributor internationally, but it is still providing the world the tools of our destruction by exporting tar. The fossil fuel industry should be paying the bills for the damage their antisocial behaviour has generated. They have the deep pockets needed to address this catastrophe. "Green energy" is the future for this world. After the irreparable damage that the oil industry has done in Alberta, it is unforgivable to be declaring a moratorium on green energy development. If we can't stop the fossil fuels magnates trying to end human life on Earth, we are doomed. Look at Yellowknife. Look at the diminishing glaciers that furnish water for Alberta farmers. Consider the wildfires all across Canada. How can industry leaders and government officials continue to support this disaster? It is more than overdue for voters to pay attention to the most important issue of our time and stop the people in the pocket of the fossil fuel industry from destroying human life and political stability on the planet. I just hope it is not too late. Tom McElroy,Toronto, Ont.
