We have been waiting for meaningful climate mitigation policies for some time, and as we wait, I am reminded of Samuel Beckett’s famous play, Waiting for Godot, and his two characters Vladimir and Estragon who wait for Godot who never arrives. We are waiting for someone to appear and make that transformative change on climate change. We forget that we are “someone” and if we want that change we can’t wait for Godot. The change needed involves more than reducing, recycling and reusing; it is the very system that created the dire situation in which we are now living. By all means we should continue with the three Rs, but we need transformative change and system change. Is that too big a caveat for having a livable future? Ron Robinson Nelson, B.C.
