Re: "Canadas climate fight is full of question marks," (The Hill Times, April 26, editorial). Much thanks to Environment Commissioner Jerry DeMarco for raising the alarm. As a longtime climate activist focused on effective climate mitigation, I have written many times on these pages that Canada was still in a climate plan to fail, and that time for real action was running short. We are moving into a strong El Niño, and climate impacts and damage could therefore increase exponentially. Canada should have been a climate leader by limiting fossil fuel expansion and beginning to regulate a wind-down of all fossil fuel production based on a carbon budget schedule. Instead, our governments initiated pretend mitigation while doing everything in their power to increase fossil fuel production. Canada is a laggard and soon to be a pariah. Remember this as the El Niño-accelerated damage surges.Bill Henderson Gibsons, B.C.
