The federal public transit fund sits at the intersection of economic and climate progress for Canadians
Municipal leaders, through the FCM, have called on the federal government to launch the fund in 2023 and phase it in, beginning with funding for planning and design, enabling municipalities to advance transit expansion projects without delay.
The $3-billion-per-year federal public transit fund is not scheduled to come into effect until 2026-27. If this fund is going to be effective in helping communities reach those critical 2030 GHG reduction targets, and in driving transformative change in communities across Canada, the program must start soon, writes Carole Saab.
