Re: "Activists urge investigation of NCC, Ottawa City Council approval of new $2.8-billion Ottawa Civic Hospital Civic campus site," (The Hill Times, Nov. 8 online). With respect to Matt Horwood’s story, I found the government responses surprising. Liberal MP Yasir Naqvi suggested there was not enough public consultation? The NCC review of 12 possible locations, included responses from 7,695 people in the region, 1,550 of whom were against, outright, of the use of the Experimental Farm location. Liberal MP Catherine McKenna first agreed with the NCC's Tunney’s Pasture recommendation, then did not. Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson, meanwhile, suggested the board was against Tunney’s Pasture, so he held a private meeting where 50 acres of federal land—with more than 600 diverse and mature trees, land with rich historical, cultural significance, which includes the Queen Juliana park—was given away without so much as the meeting minutes being taken. We may have a democracy, but what unfolded here is something else. Christophe Elie Ottawa, Ont.
