Delayed start puts accountability on hold in 44th Parliament

Minority governments are supposed to be more, not less accountable. By delaying the opening of the 44th Parliament, it appears that the government intends to sidestep parliamentary oversight and scrutiny for the rest of this year.

With unprecedented public debt levels and emergency spending for COVID-19, Parliament’s input into the budget formulation process and oversight over government spending is more needed than ever. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's choice to convene Parliament in late November means key committees will be unable to proceed quickly and do their important work ahead of the next budget, writes Geoff Dubrow.
