No vaccines without investment in research: sobering

We must act, and act now. We strongly recommend that the budgets of Canada’s granting councils (CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC) be at least doubled and that this additional funding be directed to support investigator-led research operating grants. This will help us do the foundational work that needs done and to attract and retain the scientific talent that we need.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, pictured June 4, 2021, in Ottawa. As we have learned, pandemics do not care if we are ready for them or not. Let's take the steps that we need to take now to rebuild our basic science capabilities. The health of future Canadians may well depend on what we invest in today, write Abraham Fuks and Senator Stan Kutcher. The Hill Times photograph by Sam Garcia
