We must ensure post-pandemic employment for so-called ‘expendables’
So we will need to pay much greater attention to building a better future for low-wage workers.
In a recent speech, Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem acknowledged the economic pain of many low-wage workers—employment in low-wage work is more than 25 per cent below its pre-pandemic level. But he was optimistic that once Canada achieved widespread vaccination, high-contact service industries such as retailing and restaurants should be able to resume something approaching 'full operations.'
