The Suffering Servant of Baghdad A Peacemaker’s Iraq

By Jim Loney

Jim Loney, Harmeet Sooden, Norman Kember and Tom Fox await their future in the hands of their captors while the Muslim and Christian worlds call out for mercy for these innocent peacemakers. The arbitrary deadline set for their execution is Thursday. Meanwhile, a new window of understanding begins to open on the previously little-known organization, Christian Peacemaker Teams, where people of good will, emboldened by their faith, are willing to go to war non-violently to save innocent victims from violence. In their own words, “To put ourselves in the way” in some of the world’s most acute crisis areas. Jim Loney is a veteran of at least three of those peacemaker operations. He is also a writer whose work is frequently published in the Toronto Catholic New Times. The following is a recent column from Iraq he sent to friends.
