Bumpy ride ahead on the bandwagon: why Canadian foreign policy lacks direction

By Sakhi Naimpoor

By exclusively focusing on the dissemination of some of our values, Canada is merely amplifying its domestic priorities outwards while other pressing geostrategic issues are flouted.

U.S. President Donald Trump meets with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in London on Dec. 3, 2019. Considering that Canada is increasingly becoming an insignificant player in world affairs, the bandwagoning and dancing along with the political tunes of the Trump administration is a questionable practice for the long term that defies our liberal internationalist values, writes Sakhi Naimpoor. Foreign policy is often explained and understood as a state’s inner values projected outwards to the realm of international relations. For Canada, which is built on the democratic pillars of liberal principles, this means upholding the virtues of human rights, free and fair elections, gender equality, and an independent and benevolent foreign policy, among others.
