The Gambia, a small country in West Africa, has just filed a case at the International Court of Justice against Myanmar for violations of the Genocide Convention against its Rohingya minority. Our foreign affairs minister has expressed support for this initiative, and has said that Canada will explore options to support Gambia’s efforts. In 2018, the Canadian Parliament led the international community with its determination that the situation in Myanmar was indeed a “genocide.” The minister, as well as our special envoy to Myanmar, Bob Rae, issued strong statements calling for the accountability of the perpetrators, and to uphold the international rules-based order.
