Re: the letter to the editor, “Bishops speaking out on nuclear weapons at odds with church-state separation,” (The Hill Times, Oct. 23, p. 8) by Andrew Romain. I think he is mistaken on the concept of separation of church and state. Church and state are separate precisely so that they can monitor and criticize each other. Congratulations to the Canadian Catholic bishops for articulating the issues we all should be concerned, as discussed in Douglas Roche’s op-ed, “Canadian Catholic bishops show world leadership in condemning nuclear weapons,” (The Hill Times, Oct. 9, p. 5).
