In the winter of 1916, my grandfather, Milosav Pavlovic, quit his job in Portland, Oregon, and joined thousands of South Slav volunteers from the United States and Canada who used the Port of Halifax to sail off to the European southern front. He marched all the way through northern Greece and southern Macedonia. Wounded at Kaymakchalan in September 1916, he was captured by the enemy forces and spent the rest of the war in a Kriegsgefangenenlager—POW Camp, Karlstein (lower Austria). My wife’s grandfather lost his life at the Bardanjol, during the initial campaign in Montenegro in 1915.
