ST. JOHN’S—Why do Canadian politicians write books? The motivation is presumably not financial. For those seeking higher office, an autobiography can be an image-shaping tool, as with Justin Trudeau’s Common Ground (HarperCollins, 2014) or Jagmeet Singh’s recently released Love & Courage (Simon & Schuster, 2019). For those who have left politics, a book is a way to tell the inside story about what really transpired. It is an opportunity to set the record straight. As well, taking a trip down memory lane can be cathartic.
