They say change comes in waves. And lately we’ve seen the start of a tidal wave of businesses announcing how they will reduce their plastic footprint. Nestlé, the biggest food company in the world, recently announced a global phase-out of hard-to-recycle materials and committed to 50 per cent recycled content for its plastic water bottles by 2025. A&W eliminated plastic straws from all its restaurants, saving an estimated 85 million straws from being used, and KFC made a similar announcement. In Canada, Walmart recently announced its plastics charter committing to reduce single use plastics in its operation and own-brand products. Air Canada also said it wanted to reduce single use items, starting with eliminating an estimated 35 million plastic stirrers per year beginning July 2019. The list goes on.
