TORONTO—For the last few weeks, Parliament has conducted hearings on M-103, the motion to study, among other things, Islamophobia. If you listen to conservative opponents of the motion, their overwhelming belief is that this motion will doom Canada into an illiberal fate where our most cherished freedom, the freedom of speech, will fall at the altar of political correctness. This position is little more than paranoia; but it is a paranoia we must challenge together because it is increasingly passing for normal, everyday politics. If we are not careful, this paranoia will spread like a virus through our political culture and threaten our idyllic assumptions of Canada’s inclusive democratic culture.
