Peter Harder, the government’s lead guy in the Senate, is urging the Senate to act on Auditor General Michael Ferguson’s recommendations on expenses. Harder says although the Senate is working hard to ensure the Senate expenses scandal of 2012-16 “becomes nothing more than a distant memory,” the Senate needs to establish independent oversight of Senators’ expenses and all related decision-making. He’s right. Right now, the Senate’s powerful Internal Economy Committee, headed by Conservative Senator Leo Housakos, is the “ultimate authority on Senators’ expenses.”
