Canadians should be proud of their government’s support of thousands of Syrian refugees who have fled a brutal civil war. In the last three years, almost 40,000 Syrian refugees have been resettled in hundreds of communities throughout Canada, with more applicants being processed every day. By comparison, the United States, a country of more than 300 million, has settled less than 19,000 Syrian refugees over a similar period. This not only speaks well of the Canadian government’s generosity, but also of the kindness of a large number of private sponsors who have offered housing, clothing, food, and adaptation assistance to thousands of refugees.
