In the lead-up to the North American Leaders’ Summit tomorrow, today marks the official state visit of Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto. Mr. Peña was scheduled to arrive in Ottawa last night at 11 p.m. after having dinner in Toronto with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The two will have bilateral meetings today, which will likely include topics including regional free trade, climate change, the possible repercussions of various U.S. presidential election outcomes, and of course — the Mexican visa requirement, a thorn in bilateral relations since it was imposed by Canada on Mexican visitors in 2009 after a jump in Mexican refugee claimants. Mr. Trudeau has repeatedly said he will resolve the irritant.
