Last October, infrastructure was at the heart of the Liberal platform that propelled the party to a strong majority victory. One of the clearest delineations between the major party platforms was the Liberals’ commitment to run relatively modest annual deficits (in the context of a national economy of nearly $2-trillion) to allow the expansion and upgrading of the country’s infrastructure. This must be the focus of the upcoming budget, and if done right, a multi-billion dollar infrastructure program can help set the stage for enhanced growth for decades to come.
