Science didn’t figure prominently in this election. But it should have. Research is essential to the development of sound, evidence-based public policy. It’s key to building an innovation-based knowledge economy, which is especially important now in the context of depressed prices for Canada’s natural resources and the increasing competitiveness of offshore manufacturing. And it’s vital, in this age of genomics and stem cells, if we are to build the best possible health system. More broadly, science is also an essential pillar in strong, innovative, productive and liberal democracies.
