Before he died two weeks ago, Senate Speaker Pierre Claude Nolin had recently been trying to tighten up Senators’ spending rules and promised, in a statement to The Canadian Press, that Senators would have to account more openly for how they spend taxpayers’ dollars under updated and upcoming rules. Unfortunately, Sen. Nolin died two weeks ago after a five-year battle with cancer. But the well-liked senior legislator, who had an independent streak and a unifying effect on the Senate, was on the right track in his Senate leadership.
