OTTAWA—Did you waste your vote on Oct. 14? The Green Party and the New Democratic Party both say that you wasted your vote if you voted for one of their candidates but the candidate lost. The Greens and the NDP are in favour of proportional representation (PR), a system of voting in which the proportion of votes cast for a party’s candidates determine the proportion of seats that party will occupy in the House of Commons. No vote is “wasted” since the votes cast for any of the party’s candidates contribute to the election of some of that party’s candidates.
