When a lobbyist does something really smashing and brags about it, well, that’s tolerable. But what gets my goat is lobbyists who talk the talk before they even begin to walk. There is a new shop in town and one of its consultants is strutting around sharing his team’s access and abilities. “We’ve got a premier on the verge of joining us,” I was told over the phone last week. So what, I thought. You could have five ex-Cabinet ministers on staff, but that doesn’t always mean you can solve your clients’ problems. Many firms are full of low-profile people who do great GR. People with profile can mean access. Access is getting in the door, but nothing but good cases will keep you in the door. My friend should solve a few clients’ problems and then start talking.
