Let's get right into it. Nova Scotia is in a province-wide state of emergency that will last until Aug. 5 and is wrestling with the devastating damage caused by three months' worth of rainfall and floods over the weekend. The floods forced evacuations and killed at least four people. Some parts of the province were dumped by more than 25 cm in 24 hours, as much as would normally fall in three months, according to Reuters. Some media are describing it as a rainfall of "biblical proportions." Nova Scotia Premier TIM HOUSTON told reporters at a press conference yesterday that the damage was unimaginable and will likely cost "hundreds of millions" of dollars. Canada, along with parts of the United States, Europe, and Asia, have been experiencing a record-breaking summer of heat waves and forest fires. Canada has also been hit with tornadoes and floods this summer. JOHN KERRY, the U.S. envoy for climate change, met China's climate envoy XIE ZHENHUA in Beijing, China, to discuss joint action to cut methane emissions and coal-fired power, Reuters reported. Meanwhile, in Ottawa this morning, senior government officials from Environment and Climate Change Canada and the Department of Finance are holding a technical briefing on the "fulfillment of a significant climate commitment." After the technical briefing via Zoom, Environment Minister STEVEN GUILBEAULT, will make an announcement at 11 a.m. (EDT) in Montreal at the Atrium Hydro-Québec. In the 2021 federal election, former incumbent Conservative MP BOB BENZEN won the riding with 58 per cent, while the NDP and Liberal candidates each won 17 per cent of the vote. (EDT) Toronto: Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development MARY NG (Markham-Thornhill, Ont.) is in Toronto to announce the first cohort of innovative Canadian companies to be part of the Global Hypergrowth Project. •9:30 a.m. (EDT) Toronto: Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario FILOMENA TASSI (Hamilton West-Ancaster-Dundas, Ont.) will announce support for Toronto's tech industry at ThinkData Works Inc. Then at 11:30 a.m. (local time), she will make an announcement for innovative businesses in southern Ontario at the Toronto Business Development Centre. •9:30 a.m. (EDT) Montreal: Minister of Official Languages and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency GINETTE PETITPAS TAYLOR (Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe, N.B.) will announce funding for youth. •11:30 a.m. (EDT) Toronto: Minister of Mental Health and Addictions and Associate Minister of Health CAROLYN BENNETT (Toronto-St. Paul’s, Ont.) will make an announcement regarding the three digit (9-8-8) suicide helpline. •11:30 a.m. (EDT) Edmonton: On behalf of Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson (North Vancouver, B.C.), Minister of Tourism and Associate Minister of Finance RANDY BOISSONNAULT (Edmonton Centre, Alta.) will make a 2 Billion Trees program announcement. •3:30 p.m. (EDT) Yellowknife, N.W.T.: NDP Leader JAGMEET SINGH (Burnaby South, B.C.) will meet with the Northwest Territories Premier CAROLINE COCHRANE to discuss important issues for Northwest Territories residents. After, Singh and Cochrane will speak to reporters. •5 p.m. (EDT) Sidney, B.C.: On behalf of Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard Joyce Murray (Vancouver Quadra, B.C.), Liberal MP RON MCKINNON (Coquitlam-Port Coquitlam, B.C.) will launch the first Canadian-led high seas mission to fight illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing in the North Pacific, part of the annual international law enforcement operation Operation North Pacific Guard.
