Improving access to palliative care starts with better data collection

As we recognize National Hospice Palliative Care Week this week, the federal government owes it to people across Canada to ensure that they have access to palliative care throughout their disease process, as well as at the end of life to allow them to live their lives fully, free of pain, in the setting of their choice.

Why do we have so much trouble tracking palliative care services across the country? Mainly because there is no common Canadian definition for palliative care, and no agreed upon common data sets to track services across the country, write the authors. Photograph courtesy of Pixabay

OpinionBY EDITORIAL
Prime Minister Mark Carney’s emphasis on middle powers in his Jan. 20 World Economic Forum address would be familiar to anyone studying foreign policy in Canada in the 1960s and ’70s, writes Andrew Caddell. Photograph courtesy of World Economic Forum/Ciaran McCrickard

Carney ’s embrace of middle power status sends us ‘back to the future’

OpinionBY ANDREW CADDELL
  • Hopefully, the prime minister’s description of the world is flawed, and we will again reap the benefits of global multilateral co-operation. Otherwise, we may be re-living the 1930s.
