Re: “Vet MPs say future of Afghanistan up to Afghan people, as fragile U.S.-Taliban peace deal in balance,” (The Hill Times, March 9, p. 1). Anyone who travelled across Afghanistan in the early ’70s (as I have) would have witnessed schools for girls, uncovered hair, even Western music and dress (albeit in Kabul and not the countryside). The U.S.S.R. was providing much aid and its secular influence was evident.
