Citizens of Ukrainian descent traditionally play a significant role in Canadian political life. Numbering up to 1.4-million persons, it’s one of the country’s largest ethnic communities, representing a high percentage of the population in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Ontario. For instance, in Winnipeg North, Man., Ukrainian Canadians represent almost 14 per cent of the population; in Elmwood-Transcona, Alta., more than 20 per cent; and in Yorkton-Melville, Sask., close to 30 per cent.
