Media stories on Canadian leaders not as deeply researched as in U.S., missed Trudeau’s blackface photos story

'This is where I do think that there is an interesting question, which is that if you look at the American presidential race, when there’s a serious candidate for the presidency as you have in the Democratic primary right now, you do get the big powerhouse media, meaning The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and maybe to some extent, some of the broadcast media, really go digging for stories deep in people’s history,' says Paul Adams.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, shown campaigning in Barrie, Ont., on Sept. 27, faced days of heavy scrutiny from the Canadian media surrounding his appearance in brownface makeup in yearbook photographs taken nearly two decades ago, but it's still unclear how this story will affect the Oct. 21 outcome.
