Liberals going to have to make fundamental shifts in their communications and strategy

Complicating matters is the closeness of the race, meaning the potential prize may not be all that is seems. If we are headed toward a minority, as the polls would suggest, it opens the door to a whole new level of speculation. Will it trigger leadership reviews? Are the supporting parties in any financial position to force a subsequent early election? Who would hold the balance of power? What would a coalition agreement look like? When would Parliament sit again and how would the role of an independent Senate change? Finally, given the difficulty the Conservatives may have finding a willing dance partner, the actual winner could lose and the loser could win.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, pictured Sept. 15, 2019, campaigning for Liberal MP Kim Rudd in Northumberland-Peterborough South, Ont. In this campaign, the Liberals are both the 'pitcher of record' and the frontrunner. Simply trying to repeat what worked in 2015 will not end well for them. Photograph courtesy of Twitter
