‘Still a long way to go’ to hit protection goals, First Nations will play key role

Canada must boost its land conservation areas 40 per cent by 2020 to meet its international commitment.

The Liberal government rewrote legislation, which is still before the Senate, governing the creation of the park to include stiffer environmental protections. However, at less than 80 square kilometres, the park will barely make a dent in Canada's commitment to protect almost another seven per cent of its land mass by 2020, and the government will have to rely on quicker ways to protect new territory to meet that goal.
