Good Monday morning, Prime Minister JUSTIN TRUDEAU and Deputy Prime Minister CHRYSTIA FREELAND are back in Ottawa after this weekend's surprise visit to Ukraine. Trudeau will attend a Liberal Party "donor appreciation event" this evening. The House is set for another midnight sitting today, with MPs scheduled to debate Government House Leader MARK HOLLAND’s proposal to make hybrid sittings a permanent feature of House operations. Holland’s opposite number, ANDREW SCHEER, has said this is an attempt to avoid accountability and that it would lead to more committee meetings being cancelled when House resources are stretched thin. The House is also scheduled to vote on government bills on child care (C-35) and on humanitarian operations in Afghanistan (C-41), and an opposition motion from Bloc Québécois Leader YVES-FRANÇOIS BLANCHET demanding more ambition from the government on climate change in the wake of ongoing forest fires. The Senate will return tomorrow. Hockey dad Karl Subban to participate in safe sport study The House Heritage Committee will meet at 11 a.m. Ottawa time to continue its study of safe sport. Much of the committee’s work has addressed how national sport organizations have addressed violence and abuse involving sport officials and athletes. That focus will likely continue today with a witness list that includes current and former leaders of the organizations for speed skating, bobsleigh and skeleton, rugby, and figure skating. But today’s hearings will also address the recent explosion of gambling ads as part of sports broadcasts. Hockey dad and former high school principal KARL SUBBAN, now a member of the group Ban Ads for Gambling, will appear before the committee to make the case for restrictions on gambling advertising. What’s happening in committee? MORRIS ROSENBERG, former president and CEO of the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation, will appear before the House Public Accounts Committee at 11 a.m. Ottawa time. The former public servant has previously told the House Ethics Committee the foundation was “naive” to accept a 2016 donation from business leaders linked to the Chinese government. The House Committee on International Trade will meet at 11 a.m. Ottawa time to hear from forestry industry representatives about American tariffs on Canadian softwood lumber. The House Status of Women Committee will meet at 11 a.m. Ottawa time to continue its study of menstrual equity in Canada. MPs will hear from the British Columbia government’s period poverty task force as well as from representatives of a Vancouver company that manufactures reusable menstrual care products. The House Industry Committee will meet at 3:30 p.m. Ottawa time to resume its study of Bill C-42, a government bill to create a public, national registry of the beneficial owners of corporations. The committee will hear today from transparency advocates who say a national registry would address money laundering, tax evasion, and the financing of terrorism. Government and police representatives will also appear before the committee today. The Hill Times photograph by Andrew Meade Liberal MP SHERRY ROMANADO will appear before the Senate Committee on National Security, Defence and Veterans Affairs at 4 p.m. Ottawa time to discuss Bill C-224, her private member’s bill to address cancers linked to firefighting. The committee will also hear today from representatives from the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs, the International Association of Firefighters, and Health Canada. Public Safety Minister MARCO MENDICINO will appear before the Senate Human Rights Committee at 5 p.m. Ottawa time to discuss Bill C-41, a government bill that would amend the Criminal Code to allow Canadian humanitarian organizations to operate in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan without breaking rules against the financing of terrorism. Representatives of the Canadian Red Cross, World Vision Canada, Doctors Without Borders, and the Afghan Women's Organization Refugee and Immigrant Services will also appear before the committee today. Conservative MP SCOT DAVIDSON, whose Ontario riding is a major vegetable producer, will appear before the House Agriculture Committee at 6:30 p.m. Ottawa time to speak about Bill C-280, his private member’s bill to amend Canada’s bankruptcy laws to provide additional protection to fruit and vegetable growers. The committee will also hear today from several industry representatives. What else is happening today? Federal Industry Minister FRANÇOIS-PHILIPPE CHAMPAGNE and Quebec Premier FRANÇOIS LEGAULT will be in Saguenay, Que., at 9 a.m. local time for an unspecified announcement. Meteorologists from the Environment Department will hold a virtual press conference at 11:30 a.m. Ottawa time to discuss weather forecasts for Ontario and Quebec. Local Liberal MP ANDY FILLMORE will be in Halifax at 11 a.m. local time to participate in a plaque unveiling ceremony to honour Canadian boxer GEORGE DIXON (1870-1908), who has been described as the first Black athlete to win a world championship in any sport.
