New documents raise questions about Canada’s lengthy naval shipbuilding delays

It was well known in government circles by the summer of 2003 that replacement of the destroyers and frigates would not begin to take place until post-2020, according to documents obtained through an access-to-information request.

The Canadian Surface Combatant project which began in 2005 was supposed to deliver not only replacements for the navy’s Halifax-class frigates, pictured, but also three Iroquois-class destroyer replacements, writes Alex Howlett. During a Feb. 17 press conference in the West Block, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre was asked if he had spoken to MP Jamil Jivani about his comments that Canada was having an 'anti-America hissy fit.' Poilievre repudiated Jivani's words but ever so mildly, writes Michael Harris. The Hill Times photograph by Andrew Meade
