The Telfer School of Management’s MBA program is pleased to announce a new and distinct area of focus on Public Management. This comes in response to recent trends in the makeup of our student body, where approximately 35% of the graduates from our 12-month intensive program find work in public management, while close to 40% of our cohort in the 24-month professional program already hold jobs in the public sector. Therefore, the intent of this new area of focus is to provide students with contextual knowledge of public management to augment their understanding of the fundamentals of management practices.
Addressing the Public Sector’s Accelerating Orientation Toward Results
This new MBA area of focus is especially important given the acceleration of results-oriented practices noted in most public-sector organizations. We believe, therefore, that the blend of fundamental management skills applicable to all organizations, coupled with contextual knowledge of public management, will provide our graduates with a sound foundation for enabling success in this sector.
According to MBA Director, Greg Richards, “I’ve worked in both the public and private sectors. I’ve faced similar problems in both sectors; but certainly, public management can be more complex given the public policy implications of the work and the constant scrutiny that comes along with using taxpayer dollars to deliver value to Canadians. Our objective with this new area of focus is to help our students understand the importance and the challenge inherent to public management so that they may step into public sector organizations with confidence that they can deliver expected results”.
