Senate to pass feds’ controversial elections overhaul bill by end of June: Carignan

The government majority in the Senate has set the end of June as the deadline to pass one of the most controversial bills the Conservatives have introduced in eight years.

Senate Government Leader Claude Carignan said the government set the timetable to vote final passage of Bill C-23 through Parliament ‘before the summer’ to ensure Canada’s Chief Electoral Officer Marc Mayrand has enough time to put in place whatever changes are required because of the new law before the next general election—currently scheduled to take place in the fall of 2015.
