It’s a big year for physics – around the world and right here in Canada. The United Nations declared 2025 the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, in recognition of the 100th anniversary of quantum mechanics.

Several new global projects kicked off, with the world’s most powerful wide-field observatory taking its first photos, CERN’s Large Hadron Collider firing up for its latest run, Quantum computing companies setting new benchmarks, and evidence mounting that dark energy in the universe is evolving, sending physicists to work to understand it.
At Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, we’re deep in the scientific trenches this year too, as we mark our twenty-fifth anniversary. After a quarter-century of discovery, we’ve got a lot to be proud of.
Getting down to business.
Perimeter Institute has been across the country this year, making new connections, strengthening old partnerships, and finding ways to make Canada’s research ecosystem stronger. From Halifax’s start-up incubators to Montreal’s Artificial Intelligence hub, to Vancouver’s particle accelerator centre, to Waterloo Region’s quantum ecosystem, and everything in between, it’s clear that this country has the potential to achieve great things, especially by working together.

- Canada is currently building the most ambitious radio telescope on Canadian soil ever attempted. It’s a partnership, with more than a dozen organizations working together to make it happen.
- Canadian innovators just launched the world’s first open-source, full stack quantum computer, built on the democratic, trust-enabling model pioneered by the likes of Linux and PyTorch.
- There are more than 120,000 scientific papers published by Canadians every year, and most are collaborations.
Innovation Starts with Exploration.
The role Perimeter plays in the development and pursuit of innovation is the first step in a long journey. Theory enables experiment, experiment leads to technology, technology builds an economy. The physicists at Perimeter explore the universe, from infinite to the infinitesimal, striving to understand its foundational laws and quantum mechanics knowing, one day, their discoveries will lead to technologies and innovations that will change the world around us.

Science is a team sport. Innovation is built on the back of an entire ecosystem. And a healthy Canadian innovation ecosystem needs you. It needs the investment of Canadian leaders in policy and industry. It needs to enable a pipeline of young talent, in graduate programs and incubators, who will make the breakthroughs of tomorrow. And it needs to make ambitious bets on visionary programs.
Canadians believe in the power of research and innovation. Over twenty-five years, Perimeter Institute has been making that innovation happen, together, with our partners. We’re looking forward now, to the next twenty-five years.
