If we are to successfully confront the multiple threats we now face, we need restructured economies, including in Canada, that reflect more intimately the connection between ethics and economics.
Canada's 21st century foreign policy will need to be much more balanced with an increased focus on containing the global threats to sustainable and more equitable growth on the planet as a whole.
When one considers that global pandemics are not the only challenge we face in the years to come, this blatant disregard for science and public health is even more unsettling.
Other governments have chosen to address the facts rather than pursue the fictional interpretations of a president whose overriding motive is to present himself in only a positive light.
In selecting their policy direction, the prime minister and his deputy need to act practically, while at the same time doing the right thing for Canadians, including those in Alberta and Saskatchewan.
Canada’s interests will probably therefore coincide increasingly with western Europe and those economies seeking to strengthen the core values that underpin liberal democracy globally.
