Recently, U.S. President Donald Trump asserted once again that a U.S. invasion was on the table, a threat that was bolstered by his hawkish security adviser, John Bolton. The thinking likely is that even the threat of U.S. action may intimidate Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro into stepping down or make the army think twice about supporting him. This, however, is mistaken because if anything Mr. Trump is doing Mr. Maduro a favour.
