OTTAWA—There’s an old saying about the ivory-tower types who write editorials for newspapers: they’re like the people who ride down out of the mountains after the battle and shoot the wounded. Some politicians might say that applies to all journalists, and it’s true public office holders take a lot of punishment as they carry on through the highs and lows of their careers.
