PARLIAMENT HILL—In the 2012 Quebec election campaign, TVA, the most-watched French-language broadcaster in the country, set aside three consecutive nights in prime-time for three one-on-one debates featuring then-incumbent premier Jean Charest, PQ challenger Pauline Marois and CAQ leader François Legault. The ratings were through the roof. It was great TV, great politics, and, most importantly, great for democracy. Voter turnout in that election was a staggering 75 per cent, easily the best in any provincial or general election in years.
