MONTREAL—Is society evolving as quickly as technology? Are the two influencing and changing one another simultaneously? Or is scientific advancement outpacing the adaptive capacities of societies altogether? It is the job of scientists to develop and introduce potentially transformative technologies, which they are doing at an impressive and unprecedented rate. But it is the job of social scientists and humanists to answer these larger questions, to interest themselves in scientific research by considering the ethical, environmental, economic, legal and social implications of emerging technologies.
