Six months is too long, it’s time we do better by Haiti

Before the earthquake, Haiti was the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Today, it appears to be the poorest country in the world.
PORTE-AU-PRINCE, HAITI—Recently, several of my constituents asked me to visit Haiti to see international relief efforts after the devastating earthquake which rocked Haiti on Jan. 12, 2010. The earthquake, a magnitude 7.0 on the Richter scale, left an estimated 230,000 people dead, 300,000 injured and 1,000,000 homeless. It is also estimated that 250,000 residences and 30,000 commercial buildings collapsed or were severely damaged.
