The pharmaceutical industry is important for the Canadian economy as well for all Canadians. As the population ages, it is crucial that this industry grows to allow the discovery of new medications. We need specifically to shorten the approval process for drug registration so that these drugs can be marketed and made available to those who really need them. We also need to protect our intellectual property and our patent process. Under the Progressive Conservative government, steps were taken between 1987 and 1991 to bring the level of intellectual property protection in Canada to international standards. This was in the form of the Patent Act (Bill C-22) and Bill 91. In exchange, the pharmaceutical industry made a commitment to increase investments in medical research and development.
