Roche advances peace and development, has scars to prove it

There is in Doug Roche's latest book an undercurrent of disappointment with the political system. Advancing peace and development issues was not easy.

OTTAWA—Doug Roche has had a busy life, serving as a Member of Parliament, as Canada's disarmament ambassador to the United Nations, and as an Independent member of the Senate. He has also written or participated in 19 books, an impressive feat given his many professional and family responsibilities. His latest offering is called Creative Dissent: A Politician's Struggle for Peace. It is at once a personal, political, and diplomatic memoir and in the hands of a talented, if unadorned writer, it is a significant cut above the usual "told-to" memoirs of many retired politicians.
