OTTAWA—Parliamentarian Jean-Robert Gauthier stared death in the face 13 times and beat it.

Such was his tenacity that even a debilitating 12-year-long illness that left his body weakened could not dampen his spirit.

Hundreds thronged to his funeral at Ottawa's Notre Dame Cathedral last week for the sendoff of one of Canada's greatest Members of Parliament.
